Job Code: SD030

Job Offer from January 13, 2023

The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) in Mülheim an der Ruhr studies fundamental chemical processes for energy storage in chemical molecules. The department of “Inorganic Spectroscopy” is presently looking for a candidate for a PhD student or Postdoc position (m/f/d) in heterogeneous catalysis and X-ray spectroscopy.

The position is available immediately. The doctoral researcher will work on a 3-year-doctoral-program and the postdoctoral position is initially for 24 months, with the possibility of an additional one-year renewal.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Serena DeBeer, and work closely with Dr. Liqun Kang and Dr. Yves Kayser.

Your tasks

The Department of Inorganic Spectroscopy at MPI CEC provides a unique environment, which brings together state-of-the-art experimental approaches with theory to understand challenging question in energy research. The appointed researcher will be involved in the TransHyDE research network (Reforming of ammonia - transport of H2 via derivatives) and will work on the "AmmoRef" project (NH3 reforming - catalyst synthesis/characterization/mechanisms) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aims followed will be the X-ray spectroscopic characterization of structure and electronic configuration of ammonia reformation catalysts under in situ or operando conditions. The researcher will also take part in setup development, data analysis and preparing scientific publications.

Your qualifications

For the PhD position, we require the Master's degree certificate in chemistry, and for the postdoctoral position, we also require the PhD degree in chemistry. The candidate should have a strong background in heterogeneous catalysis with an interest to learn X-ray spectroscopy techniques applicable with the in-house instrumentation or using synchrotron radiation. Candidate with knowledge and working experience of heterogeneous catalysis and/or X-ray spectroscopy techniques is preferred.

Our offer

We offer an international, dynamic working environment in a renowned research institute, family-friendly jobs and flexible working hours. The PhD will be remunerated according to the Max Planck Society´s funding guidelines for junior scientists and the postdoctoral position according to TVöD (Bund) in line with your qualifications and professional experience.
