Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Gottingen, NIEDERSACHSEN

Are you interested in applied biomedical research and drug development? The Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP invites you to apply for a versatile PhD position in the field of stem cells and genome editing within Dr. Lukas Cyganek’s working group at our site in Göttingen.

At our »Translational Neuroinflammation and Automated Microscopy TNM« site in Göttingen, we pursue innovative approaches for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the central nervous system.

Dr. Lukas Cyganek's working group develops innovative human cell and organoid models for drug development and biomarker identification based on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

What you will do

  • In your role as a PhD student, one of your key responsibilities will be developing iPSC-based 2D and organoid disease models of neurological disorders for use in imaging-based high-throughput screening.
  • You’ll use CRISPR/Cas9 to perform targeted genetic modifications in iPSCs to uncover disease-associated molecular and functional phenotypes.
  • Furthermore, your tasks include establishing high-throughput screening methods for imaging-based analysis and high-resolution microscopy.
  • By engaging in preclinical compound screening, you will focus your efforts on the identification of novel therapeutics.
  • Additionally, you’ll play a vital role in supporting our industry and medical cooperation partners.

What you bring to the table

  • University degree (Master or equivalent) in biology, pharmacology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Ability to plan and execute complex experimental approaches
  • Practical experiences in cell culture and molecular biology – additional experience with human iPSC culture and CRISPR/Cas9 technology are advantageous
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Team spirit, strong motivation, and desire to work at the interdisciplinary intersection of medicine, biology, chemistry, and physics
  • An integrative personality, equally at home with medical topics and molecular biology, a structured and independent work style, and the ability to work in an international team.

What you can expect

The weekly working time is 25 hours. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
