Within the Faculty of Medicine and at the ‘Göttingen campus’, the Department of Medical Statistics (Chair: Professor Tim Friede) offers a statistical advisory service and teaching in the fields of biostatistics as well as bioinformatic analysis of clinical and genomic data. Members of the Department also conduct research in the fields of adaptive designs of clinical trials, meta-analysis / evidence synthesis, survival analysis and computational statistics.

For a project within the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), we are looking for a PhD student. In the project we will develop innovative (adaptive) designs and new analysis techniques, in particular for early clinical trials in the clinical development phases I and II. The aim of the project is to combine statistical methods of adaptive designs for clinical studies and Bayesian methods of evidence synthesis aiming at robust and efficient evaluations of therapies including drugs, biologics and devices using advanced decision criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Development of statistical methodologies in the fields of Bayesian statistics, adaptive designs for (early) clinical trials and evidence synthesis
  • Implementation of the new methods in statistical software (preferably in R)
  • Publication of the results and their presentation at scientific conferences

Requirements

  • Master degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Biometry or a related field
  • Interest in the development and application of statistical methods
  • Very good knowledge in statistical software packages (especially in R)
  • Knowledge in the field of Bayesian statistics, evidence synthesis, adaptive designs and early clinical trials is an advantage
  • High proficiency in English
  • High level of motivation, ability to work in a team, proactive personality, scientific curiosity and willingness to learn
