The Marine Chemistry Department of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research

Warnemünde (IOW) is offering a part-time (26 hrs/week)

                                               PhD student

position starting September 15th 2022. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale at level EG 13. It is a temporary employment for 36 months.

The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.

Job description

The successful candidate will continue development of an existing lab set-up for the determination of methane concentration in seawater. A set-up for in situ use will be designed, built and qualified in the lab as well as qualified and deployed at sea. The measurement of methane concentration is based on the determination of refractive index of a functionalized polymer layer using plasmon resonance spectroscopy.*

Qualification

A very good degree MSc in chemistry or a related discipline, knowledge of marine chemistry, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and properties of polymer membranes and their functionalization, programming skills in Matlab or R and microcontroller programming are required. The ability to work in a team and willingness and ability to participate in research voyages at sea are also necessary requirements.

Manual dexterity and experience in or willingness to get acquainted with the areas of mechanics, optics and electronics in addition to chemistry are desirable. Good knowledge of the English language is expected.
