The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include: Planning, conducting, troubleshooting and summarizing experiments of the project „Developing predictive tools for material research: modelling fungal biofilm formation and material colonisation"

This project will study fungi-induced material deterioration and will aim specifically at describing the growth of rock biofilms .

We will use the advantages of the new model species Knufia petricola . Modelling tools will be developed in collaboration with University of Birmingha( Kreft Lab: University of Birmingham (bham.ac.uk) ). 

Your qualifications: Essential requirements:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma, master's degree) in microbiology, biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biophysics, biomathematics or comparable discipline                                                                                                             In the case of foreign educational qualifications, please send us the relevant proof of equivalence with a German qualification.   • Research experience, skills or equivalent proven knowledge in microbiological, material, physical or environmental sciences
  • Practical experience with aseptic working techniques
  • Research experience or knowledge in mycology, microscopy, image analysis, cell or biofilm sciences, mathematical modelling, and/or computer programming
  • Experience or training in statistical approaches applied to relevant scientific data
  • A strong commitment to the research in this project as part of on-going career development
  • Willingness to design, execute, troubleshoot and write up experimental and modelling work independently
  • Broad appreciation of wider relevant disciplines, including microbiology, environmental and material sciences
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills

Desired requirements:

  • Skills in data analysis tools, e.g. Matlab, R, Python, Origin
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members across a wide range of disciplines
  • Readiness to supervise students in the project
  • Flexibility and conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
