Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract until 36 months / Permanent contract
The working time is 65% or 100%.

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

You are preparing a PhD in the field of data-driven approaches for determining material properties, such as compressive strength, workability and durability of recycled materials, as part of the EU project Reincarnate on the recycling of building components and construction materials. The aim is to enable the most accurate possible evaluation of materials in a circular economy. To this end, various data sets (based on laboratory and literature values) will be created that describe the properties of recycled materials based on laboratory tests but also in terms of environmental and recycling process-based characteristics. A focus of this task will be on recycled concrete, but possibilities to generalise machine learning approaches for other materials such as glass, concrete, steel, ceramics and aluminium will also be explored. The models will be used in a circular economy information management system to intelligently control material flows.
You collaborate closely with colleagues from academia and industry and participate in regular project meetings across Europe, discussing and presenting the results of their work in English.

Your qualifications:

- Completed scientific university studies (diploma, master's degree) in engineering, computer science, technical software development, mathematics, physics, data engineering or similar
- Very good knowledge of data science and/or machine learning
- Very good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Java, C++)
- Ideally, knowledge of handling digital research data and processes as well as related tools such as electronic lab books, Git, data archiving
- Practical experience in materials testing and analysis of inorganic building materials is an advantage
- Knowledge of the chemical-mineralogical, morphological and structural characterisation of inorganic building and residual materials is advantageous
- Knowledge and experience in software development is an advantage
- Very good knowledge of the English language, both written and spoken
- Experience in the preparation of scientific presentations and publications
