Overview
We have an open vacancy for a PhD student in communication theory and the application of machine learning in reliable communications at the Communications Engineering Lab (CEL, Prof. Laurent Schmalen) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. The vacancy is associated with a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant project targeting the development of novel design guidelines for ultra-energy-efficient communication systems.
The tasks include carrying out independently research in the field of energy efficient reliable and robust communication systems enhanced by machine learning for multiple applications such as, e.g., Industry 4.0, optical and wireless communications. This includes the mathematical analysis of new data transmission schemes, a data-driven optimization using techniques from deep learning, graph neural networks, pruning techniques and optimization as well as the software implementation of simulation and evaluation tools. Besides this, you are responsible for the documentation and publication of selected research results in scientific journals and conferences. The job is associated with the goal of graduating with a PhD degree (German title Dr.-Ing.).
Personal qualifications
You are in possession of a very good M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and information technology or communications engineering. You have additionally profound knowledge in communication theory, signal processing and machine learning, are fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is considered a plus), and you are able to work independently and responsibly. Ideally, you have experience in programming and further knowledge in one or more of the following topic areas: coding theory, information theory, optical communications and deep learning. You have confident manners and are professional in dealing with project partners, students. You are a team player and you are equipped with organizational talent. Ideally, you have experience in one of the following programming/development environments: Python/MATLAB/PyTorch/Tensorflow/C++.
What we Offer
At the CEL at KIT, you can expect an interdisciplinary research environment at the interface betwen electrical engineering, information technology, computer science and physics, offering you large scientific freedom. We offer full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary at pay grade TVL-E13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements. We offer a flexible and well-equipped working and research environment with access to any resources (e.g. compute clusters) that you need for pursuing your research. The typical duration to get a PhD is 4 years.
Your Application
Please direct your application directly to Prof. Laurent Schmalen (http://www.cel.kit.edu ) . You application should include:
- A brief summary of your research interests and motivation

- If available, publications in your name
About Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was established by the merger of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH and the Universität Karlsruhe (TH) on October 01, 2009. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a public non-profit institution pursuing the tasks of a State University of Baden-Wuerttemberg and of a national research center of the German Helmholtz Association. KIT’s mission combines the three strategic lines of activity of research, higher education, and innovation. With about 9,300 employees and 25,500 students, KIT is one of the largest institutions of research and higher education in natural sciences and engineering in Europe. Engineering sciences, natural sciences, the humanities, and social sciences make up the scope of subjects covered by KIT. In high interdisciplinary interaction, scientists of these disciplines study topics extending from the fundamentals to application and from the development of new technologies to the reflection of the relationship between man and technology.
