PhD Student in Epidemiology (m/f/d)
– 65% EG 13 TV-AVH –
We are seeking a highly motivated, bright, dedicated and friendly PhD fellow with a keen interest in the linkages between socio-economic factors and malaria to join our team and add their complementary skills. The PhD fellow will be based in Hamburg, Germany and must be able to work independently, and as a member of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team to carry out her/his duties.
Your tasks:
- D evelop and conduct research components embedded in a malaria birth cohort in Ghana with primary data collection
- Analyse datasets from household and individual surveys and clinical information with a focus on investigating the association between socio-economic factors and the incidence of malaria infection
- Support in an on-going clinical evaluation of AntimalarialS tri-therapy with AtovAquone Proguanil for treatment of uncomplicated malaria in African children (ASAAP)
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences
- Contribute to teaching and supervision of master’s and doctoral students
Your Profile:
- University degree (Master) and/or equivalent expertise in epidemiology, including a good understanding of study design
- Documented additional expertise in a related discipline, e.g. in public/global health, medicine, biostatistics, or social sciences
- Strong quantitative analytical research skills, preferably including data management
- Advanced statistical analysis skills of datasets using Stata, R, or other statistical software
- Full proficiency in written and spoken English, working knowledge of German is not required but considered an asset
- Willingness and ability to travel abroad to conduct short-term (approx. 2-4 weeks) fieldwork in Africa
- Past work experience in low- and middle income countries/Global South will be considered an asset
- Self-motivated, and ability to work conscientiously on complex tasks over an extended period of time
- Past experience in teaching and mentoring students is desirable
- Willingness to undertake activities in support of the Department
