European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

Our Detector Operations group is looking for a

The position

The 1Mpixel AGIPD detectors are the fast (MHz) detectors used at SPB/SFX and MID instruments of our facility. In the future two more AGIPD detectors with modified electronics will be installed at EuXFEL. The candidate will become familiar with operation of  the 1M AGIPD detectors at EuXFEL and the existing characterisation and calibration procedures and tools. The candidate will participate in dedicated commissioning/calibration beam time campaigns and contribute to the collected data analysis  in order to study the detector performance parameters at different operating modes and experimental conditions. Based on the experience with 1M AGIPD systems, the candidate will identify  the operational parameters to be optimised for 4M detector (or its prototype), propose and develop optimised calibration and characterisation methods and procedures for different classes of scientific experiments. Together with SPB/SFX and Detector Operations group staff, the candidate will be given the chance to conceive and perform experiments allowing validating the quality of the data after optimisation of AGIPD operation parameters and calibration procedures. The tasks are in short:

  • participation to calibration and characterisation data-taking campaigns
  • contribution to calibration and characterisation of the existing AGIPD systems
  • development of new calibration and characterisation methods for the new AGIPD detectors
  • participation to scientific experiments with the AGIPD detectors and publication of results

Requirements
  • master degree in physics or equivalent
  • programming skills (Python and/or C/C++ will be considered assets)
  • basic knowledge of lab electronics setup is considered an asset
  • basic knowledge in data analysis will be considered assets
  • good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary team with English as working language
