The position is suitable for part-time employment.
As member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.
The Institute of Resource Ecology (IRE) performs research to protect humans and the environment from hazards caused by pollutants resulting from technical processes that produce energy and raw materials.
The Department of Reactor Safety of the IRE invites applications as PhD Student (f/m/d). The position will be available from 1st May 2021. The employment contract is limited to three years.
Your prospective area of responsibility includes:
The positions are integrated in an international joint project on the behavior of naturally occurring radioactive substances (NORM) in the environment (RadoNorm).
Radium, as a uranium decay product, is a naturally radioactive, mobile alkaline earth metal. In the doctoral thesis, the sorption of radium shall be investigated comparatively with barium on selected mineral phases. The aim of the work is to validate the chemical analogy relationship within the alkaline earth metals in sorption reactions.

Knowledge of thermodynamics and sorption (Surface Complexation Modelling)
Knowledge of analogy relations and estimation methods (LFER)
Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research
Good communication skills in English and in a scientific environment (e.g., participating in scientific meetings, discussions, and writing scientific publications)
Willingness to handle open radioactive materials is required.
