In general, there is an urgent clinical need for adhesives capable of effectively holding bone tissue together, as commercial medical adhesives are unable to do so. The aim of this project is to develop and produce a calcium phosphate-based paste that enables bone fragments to be bonded together in a targeted adhesive manner. The paste is based on synthetically produced calcium phosphate nanoparticles, which are chemically modified to enable internal crosslinking and strong bonding to bone tissue. The aim is to produce an adhesive that has sufficient strength even in a moist bone environment, is biodegradable, and can fix bone fragments in areas subject to stress. The bond should last approximately 3 months until the bone has healed. First, the calcium phosphate nanoparticles are functionalized in various ways (done by a cooperation partner) and then tested for their biomechanical properties in paste form. Accompanying biocompatibility tests are performed with human cell lines and primary cells. The goal is also to achieve a suitable degradation profile by osteoclasts without toxic degradation products. Finally, the influence of the calcium phosphate nanoparticles on bone resorption, bone formation and angiogenesis will be determined. Finally, the calcium phosphate nanoparticles will be tested in vivo (rat model) and bone healing/stability will be determined.

Qualifications and experience:

  • You hold a master or diploma degree in natural science (biology, biochemistry or similar)
  • You have experience with (primary) cell culture techniques and with methods used in molecular biology (qPCR, Western Blot, live/dead staining, resorption tests)
  • Experience with animal models, histological techniques and/or advanced methods in biomechanics will be advantageous
  • You are interested in aspects of bone remodeling, bone healing and adhesive research
  • You have good IT and communication skills in English
  • You are team and goal oriented
