The DWI – Leibniz-Institute for Interactive Materials is a federal and state funded research institute of the Leibniz Association based on the Melaten Campus of RWTH Aachen University. International young and experienced scientists from various disciplines develop interactive materials based on the principles of nature. It is a location at which people with different talents, experiences and skills work together, in order to learn from one another and generate new knowledge and new methods to create a better quality of life in our world.

DWI invites applications for a position as

DWI offers you a wide range of possibilities to develop further both professionally and personally in an interdisciplinary setting.

Starting from autumn 2023, a PhD student position is available in a collaborative project on "Action of Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria on Skin Pathogens in an Ex-vivo Skin Model“ in the research group of Andreas Herrmann, Professor of Macromolecular Materials and Systems.

In this project, the antimicrobial effect of the products of so-called probiotic bacteria on native human ex vivo skin and on an ex vivo skin infection model will be investigated with the aim of using the probiotic bacteria for the treatment of bacteria-associated skin diseases without using antibiotics. The probiotic bacteria will be further developed and optimized with regard to bacteriocin production using modern molecular biology techniques and synthetic biology methods, and the mutants will be tested in the skin model.
