The Department Interface Design is looking for

PhD student (f/m/d) for the battery research within the Interface Design department and Umicore

Your Tasks

  • Preparing battery electrodes and charayterising cells using electrochemical methods.
  • Performing X-ray spectroscopic measurements of as-prepared and spent battery electrodes.
  • Maintaining and expanding EMIL and HIKE capabilities for analysing electrode and electrolyte materials under real operating conditions using X-ray spectroscopy.
  • Analyzing and processing collected data and extrapolating results.
  • Presenting results at conferences and preparing publications in peer-reviewed journal.

Your Profile

  • M.Sc. in (Electro)Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Sciences or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in setting-up, operating, and maintaining UHV Equipment
  • Expertise in the field of the characterization of (buried) interfaces and surfaces using X-ray spectroscopy (PES, IPES, HAXPES, XAS, XES, RIXS) and synchrotron-based light sources
  • Sound knowledge in the field of electrochemistry; experience in electrochemical characterization of batteries will be an advantage
  • Experience in quantum chemical calculations (in particular simulations of spectra) and some previous exposure to inorganic or organic chemistry is desireable
  • Ability to work on a scientific problem independently while interacting with many collaborating groups
  • Excellent English communication skills are a must, additional German skills are advantageous
  • The position includes a secondment to Umicore (Olen, Belgium) that amounts to be 50% of the total recruitment period
  • In order to foster the spirit of the MSCA DN for transnational mobility, certain mobility rules have to be fulfilled (i.e., in the past 36 months eligible candidates cannot have spent more than 12 months in Germany)
