As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology pursues the objective of developing innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Exploration invites applications as PhD Student (f/m/d) for Statistical Analysis for Surficial Geochemical Exploration.

Subject to project approval, the position will be available from 1 July 2022. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Tasks:
Our long-term strategy is to model geochemical cycles in the critical zone to better understand the geosphere-biosphere interaction. In the SEMACRET EU-project, the application field is to develop environmental friendly and low-impact exploration tools for critical raw materials in Europe. The tasks include:
- Application and further development of statistical methods for highly noisy geochemical data
- Development of elemental uptake models for plants with respect to the geological and environmental settings
- Combining surface geochemical data with geophysical information and drill core assays to improve sensitivity of the exploration method
- Presentation of the results in international conferences and in peer-reviewed journal publications

Requirements:
- Master's degree in Geosciences, Forestry, Agricultural Sciences or Statistics
- Skills in a data science programming language (e.g. R, Python, Julia)
- Good background in statistics or keen interest to learn it
- Structured and solution-oriented working style, analytical thinking and aboveaverage commitment
- Of advantage is experience in (environmental) geochemistry, ore geology, analytical methods or geostatistics
- Very good communication skills in English, of advantage would be communication skills in Czech, Portuguese, Polish or German
