Job description:

The "GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung" in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerator facilities for science. Over the next few years, the new FAIR (Facilityfor Antiproton and Ion Research) facility, one of the largest research projects in the world, will be built in an international collaboration. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team of people who are committed to doing world-class science every day.

 

GSI Biophysics is an interdisciplinary department in the field of physical and biological radiation research with a focus on densely ionizing radiation (ion beams).

In the working group "Molecular Radiobiology & Imaging" (Prof. Dr. Burkhard Jakob) of Biophysics at the Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, in close collaboration with the working group "Systems Biology of the Stress Response" of Prof. Alexander Löwer at the TU Darmstadt, we are looking for a

Our project

In the medical use of particle radiation in tumor therapy, the preferential use of error-free double-strand break repair by homologous recombination (HR) is controversially discussed. Most experimental data to date have been obtained in repair-deficient cell lines, suggesting a substantial involvement of HR after proton irradiation. These findings may lead to appropriate strategies for clinical patient stratification. The aim of this project is to extend these studies to repair-competent cells and to investigate the use of different DNA double-strand repair mechanisms in these cells as a function of radiation quality and radiation dose. To this end, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome engineering will be used to generate reporter cell lines and quantify double-strand break repair in a time-resolved manner using live cell microscopy. In particular, the therapeutically relevant irradiation with photons, protons and carbon ions and the influence of the cellular state, especially the respective cell cycle phase, will be considered.

 

  Your profile:

  • University degree in biology or related natural sciences (M.Sc. or equivalent)
  • Strong interest in radiation biology and molecular biology work as well as microscopy
  • Strong ability to work independently
  • High self-motivation
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Very good written and spoken German and/or English skills
  • Willingness to work at both locations (TU Darmstadt und GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt)
