As part of the SPP2311 project, we are immediately seeking a candidate for a PhD or postdoctoral position in our research area with an interest in applied mathematics, programming experience, and a passion for a hands-on project with real data and applications.

Project-Summary

The presented project deals with the numerical simulation of blood flow within cerebral aneurysms. Arterial geometries are obtained from medical scans (e.g. CT) of real patients, which are then suitably meshed and processed for numerical treatment with Lattice-Boltzmann methods (LBM). For fluid simulations we rely on the high-performance LBM framework waLBerla, which is predominantly written in C++, but increasingly also masters automatic code generation via python scripts and computation on graphics cards (GPUs). Besides the simulation of the current state of an aneurysm, the treatment with coiling devices - medical micro wires which are inserted into the aneurysm, coiled up there and finally close the aneurysm and occlude it from the blood flow - is also considered. In addition to computationally intensive, full-resolution simulations, we rely here on porous media surrogate models and their LBM implementation. Effects such as the non-Newtonian behavior of blood, the pulsation of vessel walls, or the coagulation of blood, e.g., in the coil region, are also of crucial importance. Since numerous measured values and parameters are subject to many uncertainties, the project also includes aspects of uncertainty quantification (UQ) with the ultimate goal to be able to make at least statistical statements about risks and success of real and patient-specific aneurysms and their treatment options.

Tasks: The specific tasks in the project include
  • the mathematical derivation, analysis and comparison of models, methods and simulation approaches,
  • fast-prototyping of new ideas in individual code,
  • implementation of new models, methods and algorithms into an existing framework also with efficiency in mind,
  • generation and execution of relevant simulation pipelines: from real data to mathematical and clinically usable results,
  • as well as the publication of the results in the scientific community (journals, conference papers, lecture contributions, etc.)

Requirements: If you bring:
  • a degree (Master) in Applied Mathematics, CSE or similar with above average results,
  • good programming skills and experience in C++ and python,
  • fluency in written and spoken English,
  • knowledge (as part of a degree program) in numerics and simulation, especially of partial differential equations,
  • basic knowledge in mathematical modeling with/and partial differential equations, focus: fluid mechanics,
  • optional / helpful: experience with Lattice-Boltzmann methods and their implementation, high-performance computing experience.

We offer: Then you can expect from us:

  • a young, dynamic and international team of scientists from various disciplines as well as cooperation with international partners
  • an exciting and varied project with many different aspects and possibilities for expansion
  • modern hardware and infrastructure at the workplace from compute- and GPU-servers to supercomputers
  • project-related work on a dissertation (Dr. rer. nat.) at the TU Munich based on the project topic
  • salary according to the rates of the public service, level E13.

Application: Have we aroused your interest in the project and the position?

Then apply with reference to this job advertisement by e-mail to Prof. Dr. Barbara Wohlmuth: [email protected] and send us your curriculum vitae as well as your final transcript of records from your last period of education (studies/doctorate) together with your letter of application. In case you already have relevant publications (or e.g. a master thesis) that should be considered for the application, you are welcome to send them to us as well.

Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of essentially equal suitability and qualifications.
