PhD Position (m, f, d) on the Satellite-based Characterization of Cloud Evolution in Arctic Cold Air Outbreaks

Updated: about 24 hours ago

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is an internationally renowned research institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research, and a member of the Leibniz Association. Its remote sensing department is offering a 4-year PhD position within the transregional collaborative research center TR172: Arctic Amplification, Climate relevant Atmospheric and SurfaCe Processes and Feedback Mechanisms (AC)3 . The planned work shall be carried out in close collaboration with national project partners and in particular the Universities of Leipzig and Cologne.

The PhD student (m, f, d) will carry out the following tasks:

  • Characterization of cloud properties, structure and evolution including their radiative effects during Arctic Cold Air Outbreaks(CAO) with satellite observations and other complementary data sources
  • Comparison of operational satellite products with observations collected from aircraft during field campaigns during CAO
  • Long-term analysis of satellite products and reanalysis datasets to investigate natural variability and potential trends in the occurrence frequency and strength of CAO as reflected in the associated cloud properties and radiative effects

We are looking for an excellent scientist with a University degree in Meteorology or a related subject such as Physics, Mathematics or Geosciences. Prior experience in analyzing large-volume observational data and with programming in Python or similar computer languages are highly desirable. Fluency in English and the ability to clearly present research results both in spoken and written form are also essential skills.

We offer an exciting job with varied activities in an interdisciplinary working environment and a variety of work and family offers as well as flexible working hours and daycare places.
