a PhD position (m/f/d)

within the project “Digital Transformation of China’s Agriculture – Resources, Trade and Food Security”.

Application deadline: November 30, 2021

Starting date: As early as January 1, 2022

Position: 50% at the E13 TV-L level (German public services scheme)

Duration: 36 months

Work place: IAMO, Halle (Saale), Germany

The global demand for nutritious, safe, and healthy food is ever increasing. China, with scare arable land and water resources, faces a huge challenge in feeding its vast population. In recent years, China started to resort to digitalization technologies as key strategies to transform agricultural production and food value chains towards efficient, resilient, and sustainable systems. The main objective of the proposed DITAC project is to analyze and evaluate the digitalization transition in the Chinese agricultural and food sector with regard to their impact on production, resource use and trade.

The candidate will be expected to contribute to the work of a team that aims at identifying the key determinants of adoption and implementation of selected digital technologies by Chinese farms. In particular, this includes the design and implementation of decision experiments among local farmers as well as the derivation of decision determinants based on farm-level data and the development of an empirical agent-based model. The PhD thesis should be prepared within the thematic scope of the work package, however leaving ample room for own research interests and initiative.

What we expect:

  • Master degree in economics and related fields with strong focus on microeconomics
  • Strong econometric skills and interest
  • High proficiency in statistical software (mainly Stata, optional R and/or SPSS)
  • High proficiency in oral and written English; Chinese language skills of advantage
  • Focus on experimental economics and/or behavioral economics of advantage
  • High personal commitment to research
  • Willingness to learn new methods
