The Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik (PDI) performs basic research as a lively symbiosis of materials science and solid state physics. Our research aims at inspiring and demonstrating new functionalities for future information technologies. As a member of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft and Forschungsverbund Berlin we are an independent research institute with about 100 employees and collaborate with all three universities in Berlin. Synthesis and characterization of the 2D ferromagnet Fe5-xGeTe2

PDI has a long-standing expertise in epitaxial growth of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride. Recently, we have synthesized large-area films of the novel 2D material Fe3GeTe2 which is a ferromagnetic metal with highly tunable properties. In general, magnetic 2D materials are very promising building blocks for the realization of ultra-compact and innovative spintronic devices. This PhD project will investigate molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and properties of Fe5-xGeTe2 (with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1). Similar to Fe3GeTe2, Fe5-xGeTe2 is also a 2D ferromagnetic conductor. However, it exhibits a Curie temperature (TC) around or above room temperature, which is a crucial aspect regarding applications. The overall goal is to create an unprecedented structural/magnetic phase diagram for epitaxially grown Fe5-xGeTe2 films with thicknesses down to a few atomic layers. For this, the PhD student will grow samples by MBE and employ several characterization methods for the investigation of the magnetic, electrical and structural properties. PhD research at PDI profits from excellent experimental facilities for MBE and characterization as well as the close collaboration with highly competent senior scientists.

You should have a master degree in physics, materials science, or a related field, and preferentially a background in solid state physics or nanotechnology. Expertise in 2D materials and MBE is advantageous. We are looking for a new colleague who enjoys working in a highly motivated team of researchers and technicians.
