PhD Position (m/f/d) – Directed Enzyme Evolution

Applications for a PhD Position (m/f/d) in the group of Jun.-Prof. Martin Weissenborn are invited. The Weissenborn lab is an independent junior research group at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) in Halle (Saale), Germany, a member of the Leibniz Association and foundation under public law, located on the Weinberg-Campus of the Martin Luther University (MLU) Halle-Wittenberg.

Motivation: We want to engineer enzymes to increase the understanding of multiple interactions in the active site to improve enzymes activity and selectivity. Enzymes shall be developed using directed evolution (Nobel Prize 2018) within this project, which specifically modify and hence detoxify these mycotoxins.

You would be part of an interdisciplinary research training group (RTG) which focusses on your education with special seminars for your presentation skill, poster preparation, specific analytical techniques – to name only a few. Furthermore, lab rotation are planned with laboratories in Halle and worldwide.

Who should apply: We are looking for proactive, innovative and independent working style. The Master-thesis should be finalised and should preferably have centred on directed evolution, biochemistry, organic chemistry, high throughput analysis or comparable topics.

What we offer: It is a PhD position (65%, TV-L 13) starting 1st of October. Salary and social benefits are according to the German Public Service regulation (TV-L). You will have the possibility to develop yourself in a young group and motivating group atmos-phere with many new techniques in an inspiring research environment and outstanding equipment/facilities at the Leibniz-Institute and the University. You will find flat hierarchies as well as regular feedback from the group leader.

Location: Halle is a beautiful small city (240.000 inhabitants) one hour away from Berlin and 30 min from Leipzig. Due to the central location in Germany and excellent connection to the high-speed train network, you are very quickly in most areas of Germany (Frank-furt 3 hours, Hamburg 3.5 hours, Munich 3 hours) and due to the airport (Halle/Leipzig) in Europe.
