PhD Position (m/f/d) in the field of molecular magnetism (theory)

Updated: about 1 month ago

The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is a non-university research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. The IFW employs approximately 600 people and one focus is on the training of young scientists besides enhancing fundamental and applied research development. At the highest international level, the IFW operates modern materials science on a scientific basis and makes the obtained results useful for the economy. The complex and interdisciplinary research work is carried out within the IFW by five scientific institutes, which are supported by a highly developed technical infrastructure. The IFW supports its employees in reconciling work and family life and regularly submits to the berufundfamilie® audit.

PhD Position (m/f/d)

in the field of molecular magnetism (theory)

The Institute for Solid State Research (IFF) of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW Dresden) offers a PhD position in molecular magnetism modeling with starting date as soon as possible.

The main focus of this position is to develop a robust theoretical framework for the ab initio description of lanthanides-based molecular magnets with multiple magnetic centers. This theoretical/computational project will be conducted in close collaboration with a group led by Dr. Popov, the leading expert in synthesis and characterization of the promising single-molecule magnets based on endohedral metallofullerenes.

Our expectations:

The potential candidate (m/f/d) should hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science and must show core knowledge in physical chemistry, statistical physics, and advanced quantum theories. The candidate (m/f/d) should be self-motivated and interested in working independently on numerical/computational/theoretical problems.  Preferably, the applicant (m/f/d) should have experience in one or more of the following subjects: (a) Programming (Fortran/Python/C++), (b) Density Functional Theory (DFT), and (c) post-Hartree-Fock methods (ab initio). English fluency is required.

Our offer:

The salary will be based upon the TV-L scale (TV-L E13, 50 %). The initial contract is for 12 months with a possible additional 2 years renewal upon mutual agreements. IFW Dresden offers an attractive workplace with excellent facilities and an environment in Germany.

The institute promotes professional equality between all genders. In science, the IFW Dresden would like to increase the proportion of a woman. Qualified women are therefore explicitly invited to apply. Equally qualified handicapped applicants (m/f/d) will be given preference.
