The Geoecology working group within the University of Tübingen seeks to fill one

PhD position in the field of “Phosphorous cycling in archaeological caves”

The position will start possibly from March 2024 for a period of three years with possible extension, and will be primarily supervised by Prof. Oelmann and Prof. Miller. Salary will follow the German public service scale TV-L E13, 65%.

Applicants must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in archaeological sciences, geoarchaeology, geosciences/geology, soil science, paleogenetics, biology, bioinformatics or a related field. The ideal applicant will have knowledge in soil science, geoecology, or geobiochemistry, and a genuine interest in the human past. Previous experience in: 1) isotope geochemistry; and 2) phosphorus speciation is recommended. In addition, the candidate should have good communication skills in order to work in a highly collaborative and international environment, as well as very good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is appreciated but is not a requirement. 

The successful applicant will work on an interdisciplinary project focusing on phosphorous cycling in archaeological caves, with a particular focus on biogenic sources and sediments. The project is nested within the Leibniz Science Campus “Geogenomic Archaeology Campus Tübingen” (GACT). GACT brings together experts from the fields of archaeology, genetics, geosciences, ecology, and microbiology to examine the evolutionary relationship between humans and ecosystem biodiversity through the multidisciplinary analysis of sedimentary archives containing ancient DNA. The candidate will significantly focus their research on the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Swabian Jura.
