PhD position in Theory of laser induced formation and manipulation of NV centers in diamond

In the Theoretical Physics group of Prof. Dr. Martin E. Garcia at the University of Kassel a PhD position is available. The position runs until the end of the project in the framework of the granted joint project “Diamond Based Quantum Tokens” (DIQTOK). The position is initially limited to 3 years.

1) Ab-initio simulation of the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with diamond and diamond with nitrogen impurities;
2) Construction of analytical interatomic potentials for the description of laser-induced binary solids. Application to diamond with nitrogen impurities;
3) Large-scale TTM-MD simulations (two-temperature model molecular dynamics simulations) of laser production and treatment of NV centers in diamond;
4) Density functional theory calculations;
5) Machine learning-based optimization of the laser induced processes to reduce environment effects and decoherence;
6) close collaboration with the other (experimental) project partners in the DIQ-TOK project.

1) Completed course of academic study (Master degree) in physics. The degree required for this position must have been obtained by the starting date at the latest.
2) Good knowledge in the field of Theoretical Solid State Physics and Computational Physics.
3) Ability to think analytically; work independently, thoroughly and collaboratively.
4) Very good knowledge of the English language required.

Of advantage are:
1) Prior knowledge of density functional theory and machine learning;
2) Computer skills. Experience in programming
