The Department of Geochemistry and Isotope Geology at the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography, University of Göttingen is currently inviting applications for a
PhD position in Theoretical Geochemistry / Geochemical Statistics (f/m/d)
Fixed-term (3 years) at Research Assistant level (TV-L E13, 66%)
Job ID 100773
The position is part of the new “Digital Geochemical Data Infrastructure” (DIGIS) research group at the University of Göttingen, supported by a cluster of four research projects funded through the DFG’s Scientific Library Services and Information Systems (LIS) programme . A total of five research positions will be filled for three years. An extension of the positions for further three years is planned, pending excellent performance of DIGIS and successful follow-up grant application.
The aim of DIGIS is to develop and maintain the highly successful and well-established geochemical GEOROC , prepare new means of data harvesting and data entry as well as to stabilize and streamline IT connections with other existing geochemical databases such as EarthChem of the IEDA (Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance). DIGIS also forms an integral part of the current NFDI4Earth initiative.
The DIGIS research group will be composed of:
(1) IT-data scientist (Research Assistant, full-time) at the State and University Library of the University of Göttingen.
(2) Geochemist in Research Data Management and Geochemical Statistics (Research Assistant, full-time) at the Department of Geochemistry and Isotope Geology, Faculty of Geosciences and Geography, University of Göttingen.
(3) PhD position in Theoretical Geochemistry / Geochemical Statistics (Research Assistant, part-time, 66%) at the Department of Geochemistry and Isotope Geology, Faculty of Geosciences and Geography, University of Göttingen.
(4) PhD position in Computer Linguistics (Research Assistant, part-time, 66%) at the Centre of Digital Humanities, Universität Göttingen.
(5) Position in IT-Research Data Management (Research Assistant, part-time, 50%) at the Department of Geochemistry and Isotope Geology, Faculty of Geosciences and Geography, University of Göttingen.
The position to be filled here is position 3.
Project description and responsibilities:
The continents are the major platform of higher life and a unique feature of Earth amongst terrestrial planets in the Solar system. Yet, their origin and compositional evolution through deep time remains enigmatic. This project aims to characterise and investigate possible geodynamical reasons for secular changes in the composition (major-, trace elements, as well as isotopes) of the continental crust over Earth’s history. It will be based on the novel approach of creating and statistically analysing a comprehensive data compilation of representative granitoid rocks and gneisses. This project is an integral part of the DIGIS programme and collaboration with other DIGIS team members will be essential and mutually beneficial.
Candidates must have an excellent university degree (MSc.) in Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences, Statistical Sciences, Earth Sciences, or related fields as well as a strong background in mathematical modelling and statistical data analysis. We expect candidates to have demonstrated scientific creativity, problem-solving capabilities, literacy in scientific writing, the ability to work independently, as well as excellent team player qualities. Very good English skills (written and spoken) are mandatory. Experience in handling and interpreting geochemical as well as petrological data is welcome. Otherwise it will be expected that the prospective candidate is willing to acquire expert geochemical knowledge over the course of the project. In exceptional cases and depending on qualification, BSc. degrees in the above subjects may be considered. Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome.
What we offer:
At the Department of Geochemistry and Isotope Geology you will be part of a young and vibrant research group. The department has well-established links to national as well as international collaborators. Besides the DIGIS programme, its core research expertise lies in the application of state-of-the-art analytical facilities to investigate magmatic and metamorphic processes on Earth and planetary bodies. As a PhD student at the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography you will also enrol in the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS) PhD programme , which offers a wide range of extra-curriculum workshops and training as well as the opportunity to network with peers across a multitude of research fields.
Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome.
