PhD Position in Geochemistry and Phosphorus Cycling in Archaeological Caves (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%)
Department of Geosciences
Bewerbungsfrist: 04.03.2024
The Leibniz Science Campus “Geogenomic Archaeology Campus Tübingen” (GACT) seeks to fill one
PhD position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%)
to start as soon as possible for a period of three years with possible extension, and will be primarily supervised by Prof. Oelmann and Prof. Miller.
The successful applicant will work on an interdisciplinary project focusing on phosphorus cycling in archaeological caves, with a particular focus on biogenic sources and sediments. The project is nested within GACT, which brings together experts from the fields of archaeology, genetics, geosciences, ecology, and microbiology to examine the evolutionary relationship between humans and ecosystem biodiversity through the multidisciplinary analysis of sedimentary archives containing ancient DNA. The candidate will significantly focus their research on the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Swabian Jura. The caves in this region are notable for containing rich archaeological deposits composed of phosphatized loess. The candidate will investigate diagenetic pathways and their impact on preservation of sedimentary components including bone, carbonate, organic material and aDNA. The work will include novel approaches to the study of phosphorus-bearing minerals in caves, including the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Applicants must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in geosciences/geology, soil science, archaeological sciences, geoarchaeology, biochemistry or a related field. The ideal applicant will have knowledge in soil science, geoecology, or geobiochemistry, and a genuine interest in the human past. Previous experience in isotope geochemistry, phosphorus speciation or in the study of synthetic phosphorus minerals is recommended. In addition, the candidate should have good communication skills in order to work in a highly collaborative and international environment, as well as a very good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is appreciated but is not a requirement.
The University of Tübingen wishes to enhance the share of employed women in research and teaching. Individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply and, having the same occupational aptitude, will be preferred. The employment will be handled by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.
Applications should include a letter of motivation, a CV, scans of academic transcripts, and contact details of two potential academic referees. Applications should be submitted electronically no later than the 4th of March 2024 and addressed to the GACT Scientific Coordinator [email protected].
