The Helmholtz Center in Munich (HMGU), Germany, is a member of one of the leading research associations in Europe - the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. The aim of our research is to proactively detect health risks involving humans and the environment, decoding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and developing concepts for prevention and therapy.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and/or Integrative Biology to join the interdisciplinary and international research team headed by Prof. Fabiana Perocchi at the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity (https://www.helmholtz-munich.de/ido/index.html) and the Neuronal Cell biology Institute of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Our research program examines different aspects of one over-arching phenomenon: “The integration of mitochondria into intracellular signalling networks”, with the long-term goals to decipher shared, mitochondrial-dependent pathomechanisms of neuro-metabolic diseases. To this goal we integrate computational and experimental approaches that systematically survey metabolism, proteome composition, assembly, and regulation, at the tissue, cell and organellar level.

The candidate will work closely with the PI and be co-supervised by a senior researcher in computational biology and applied mathematics and become part of a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating research environment including bioinformaticians, cell biologists, neurologists and clinicians at both HMGU and TUM.

Your tasks:
• Integrative analyses of large-scale data sets including whole exome and genome sequencing, whole DNA-methylome, ChIP-sequencing of diverse targets, bulk and/or single cell RNA sequencing, and reconstruction of protein networks
• Development of web services/databases
• Development and and maintenance of genomic data analysis pipelines
• Writing of scientific papers

Your qualifications
• Master‘s degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics/Biostatistics, or Computer Science.
• Good programming skills in R, Python, and/or Perl
• Familiar with Unix and high performance computing environments. R Shiny web applications is a plus
• Excellent knowledge of biological databases such as Ensembl, Uniprot, and NCBI
• Experience with analysis of ‘omics data (e.g., genomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
• Experience with with state-of-the art genomic technologies, such as single cell sequencing technologies
• Ability to work independently
• Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work in teams with diverse professional backgrounds
• Ability to integrate knowledge from different areas of expertise
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English

The position is fully funded for four years with a standard public service salary (TVöD EG 13 65%) and it is available from January 2022. Interested applicants should send a single PDF file containing a cover/motivation letter, CV, transcripts of your grades, and contact details of 2-3 professional references directly to Prof. Perocchi at [email protected]

The Helmholtz Center as holder of the Bavarian Advancement of Women Prize and of the Total E-Quality Certificate is striving to increase the overall proportion of women on its staff and thus expressly urges qualified women to apply.
