PhD position available for development of novel high-performance structures for extreme thermomechanical loads

At our location in Munich-Garching we are looking for a full-time scientific assistant (m/f/d) in the field of development of novel high-performance structures for extreme thermomechanical loads (PhD)

The Laboratory for Product Development and Lightweight Structures explores the development and optimization of complex technical systems. Based on technical problems we develop methods, tools and solutions, optimized in terms of functionality, weight and cost. We are currently looking for a research associate (m/f/d) for an ongoing, publicly funded joint project with renowned research partners and subsequent projects. The planned date of recruitment is June 1, 2021.

The aim of the current project is the development and commissioning of a so-alled target wheel for a high power X-ray device. It is used for microbeam therapy, a new approach in cancer therapy, that requires high-intensity X-rays. X-rays are generated by decelerating electrons as they hit the target wheel. The power input in the present case is extremely high and is expected to be further increased in future concepts. The target wheel must be designed in such a way that: (1) suitable heat transport (by conduction and motion) prevents melting and (2) failure due to mechanical stresses (due to rotation and thermal stresses) is avoided at extreme temperatures. In addition, (3) requirements regarding manufacturability, assemblability, physics and medicine must be considered. Finally, the commissioning with appropriate preconditioning of the target wheel shall be supervised. The following activities are planned for the completion of the current project: (a) FE analyses of the present prototype, (b) development of a preconditioning concept with domain experts and (c) coordination of the commissioning. After completion of the project, a direct follow-up project is planned, in which a new concept for higher power inputs will be developed with project partners. For this purpose, an extensive explorative concept development is planned, which will result in a new design.


- Collaboration in the ongoing joint project for the commissioning of the present prototype for an X-ray target wheel with focus on simulation, validation, tests, coordination and commissioning
- Development of novel concepts of mechanical components for extreme thermomechanical stresses
- Execution and coordination of validation tests
- If necessary, collaboration in other chair projects
- Support of lectures and supervision of student projects

Requirements: (please explain in cover letter)

- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or similar
- Enthusiasm for experimentation, modeling and developing new ideas
- Excellent basic knowledge in engineering mechanics and FEM
- Solid fundamental knowledge in thermodynamics and heat transfer
- Strong getting-things-done mentality in project work
- Good knowledge of German or a convincingly presented willingness to acquire it
