Job Description

The overall objective of the project is to improve the near-real-time modeling and prediction of plant-mediated gas exchanges by the Community Land Model (CLM) for different plant functional types. The project focuses on the development of the model?s photosynthesis module. The candidate will develop algorithms and strategies for the assimilation of remotely sensed hyperspectral and thermal data sets, and will perform model source-code modifications. The model?s sensitivity to different parameterization strategies will be studied. The simulated photosynthetic rates will be validated based on fluorescence data provided by collaborating project sections.
The research will be carried out within Transregional Collaborative Research Centre (TR32) at the University of Köln, Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology. Please see our website ( for further information on TR32 and details on the position on offer.

Requirements for Applicant

Subject Requirements (Qualification)
Candidates with a M.Sc./Diplom in biology, plant ecophysiology, ecology, micrometeorology, environmental sciences or a related discipline are encouraged to apply. We expect a strong interest in process- and system- oriented research.
Experience in computer programming (preferably FORTRAN, C) is required. Further prerequisites are a documented proficiency in English and basic knowledge of German or the willingness to acquire this.
Skills and strong interest in numerical modeling, model development and working with large data sets are beneficial.
