“Gradient bandgap engineering in oxide perovskites for use in tandem solar cells”
as part of the ‘FuturePV’ „Grundlagen für Photovoltaik-Technologien der Zukunft“  - Graduiertenkolleg - Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture..

Project:
This subproject of ‘FuturePV’ aims to develop tuneable oxide/oxynitride perovskite thin films for use in tandem solar cells as a charge-selective contact as well as a stable n-type absorber. The primary goal is to use the strategic approach of gradient bandgap engineering to modify the transparent conducting perovskite oxides to i) an oxynitride n-type semiconductor as well as ii) to a ferroelectric layered photo absorber with conducting layers. This project will be implemented within the groups of Prof. Jasnamol Palakkal and Prof. Christian Jooss.

Your tasks and duties:

will grow epitaxial thin films of a transparent conducting perovskite oxide and its oxynitrides on various perovskite oxide substrates using a hybrid molecular beam epitaxy-pulsed laser deposition (MBE-PLD) technique. Careful study of the structure of this film by XRD, XPS, and TEM (collaboration with Prof. M Seibt / Dr. T. Meyer, University of Göttingen. See Ph.D. advt. 74378) and analysis of the electric transport and optical conductivity will allow to establish a comprehensive structure-property relationship of this new highly promising material class. Furthermore, the photovoltaic effect of niobite single junctions and its performance in a tandem cell will be investigated by systematic spectrally resolved and temperature-dependent photovoltaic measurements. Active collaboration with other project partners of ‘FuturePV’ from various research institutes in Lower Saxony is expected.

Your profile:

  • Recently obtained Master’s degree in physics, materials sciences, or closely related subject areas
  • Communication skills in English are required. Good German language skills are desirable
  • You are a team worker and self-motivated to attain project goals
Preferred Experiences (experiments, data collection, and analysis)
  • Thin film growth by pulsed laser deposition/molecular beam epitaxy
  • Structural characterization of materials by XRD, XPS, etc.
  • Optical and photovoltaic characterization
