PhD in electrochemical 3D nanoprintingPhD - Individual Supervisor

Updated: 10 months ago
Location: Oldenburg Oldenburg, NIEDERSACHSEN
Deadline: 01 Jul 2023

Description

A PhD student position (salary level E-13 TV-L, for 3 years, m/f/d), to be filled from October 1st 2023 (or as soon as possible), is open in the Junior Research Group led by Dr. Dmitry Momotenko at the Chemistry Department at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany within the framework of the ERC Grant Nanoscale 3D Printing of a Lithium Ion Battery: Rethinking the Fabrication Concept for a Revolution in Energy Storage.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals that will add to our team their competence in developing new technology, microfabrication, and materials characterization. Our goal is to make a breakthrough in major battery characteristics (charging time and power) by a paradigm shift in battery engineering: we plan to develop and employ advanced nanoscale 3D printing techniques to fabricate active battery materials with ultrasmall structural features, which will provide a hundred-to-thousand-fold increase in the surface area of the battery enabled by nanoscale spacing between electrodes without compromising the battery capacity. To reach this, high-aspect ratio features should be additively manufactured to form active materials of the cathode and the anode. We are thus looking for PhD students with interest in micro/nanotechnology, development of new instrumentation and/or with previous experience in materials synthesis and characterization techniques, especially suitable for micro- and nanoscale systems.

Your tasks:

•    development of new printing technologies at the micro- and nanoscale
•    micro- and macroscale materials characterization, including electron microscopy, electrochemical techniques, diffraction methods, NMR, IR, XPS, XRD etc
•    extensive data analysis
•    combining traditional microfabrication techniques with new small scale 3D printing methods
•    device testing
•    analytical or numerical modelling, e.g. using Comsol Multiphysics.

Essential requirements:

•    scientific university degree (MSc or equivalent qualification) in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related discipline
•    good communication skills, high level of spoken and written English
•    prior experience with micro- or nanoscale techniques (microfabrication, microscopy, scanning probe methods, microfluidics etc)

Desirable:

•    practical and theoretical experience in the areas listed above in the “Tasks” section
•    creativity, problem-solving skills, ability to learn fast
•    ability to work independently as well as in a team

We offer:

•    salary according to the E 13 TV-L 67% level for 3 years;
•    excellent research infrastructure with state-of-the-art instrumentation;
•    dynamic group atmosphere;
•    collaborative environment (we work with teams in Singapore, Germany, Switzerland);

Your application, submitted as one file must include:

•    cover letter or statement of motivation
•    CV, which should contain names, positions and contact information of two references;
•    a list of publications (if any);
•    copies of certificates and diploma supplements (with marks and credit points);
•    list of completed laboratory courses and independent research projects.

The University of Oldenburg is an equal opportunity employer that strives to increase the percentage of female employees in research and encourages applications from female candidates who will be preferred when equally qualified according to § 21 Abs. 3 NHG. Handicapped applicants will be given preference in case of equal qualifications.

The position is open until filled, but application will be accepted at least until 1st of July 2022. Application documents should be submitted (preferably via e-mail as a single pdf file) to Dr. Dmitry Momotenko, Chemistry Department, School of Mathematics and Sciences, Universität of Oldenburg, D-26111 Oldenburg.
