Join the team of Prof. Karen Alim at the TUM Campus Garching to investigate how blood vessels self-organize their network to reach uniform blood flow within body organs. We are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) to start at the TUM between now and March 2023.
Your Task
From animals’ circulatory system to random porous media in fuel cells, morphological network adaptation is crucial for optimal perfusion. In living systems, network architecture constantly changes in response to environmental stimuli towards uniform flow to optimize transport. Combining microfluidic techniques and 3D cell culture, you will grow human microvascular tissue on chip whose architecture self-organizes in response to vasoactive substances. Your work will lead the way to applications of flow-adapted on-chip vascular networks to optimally perfuse 3D tissue constructs.
Requirements
As a suitable candidate, you have an outstanding Master's degree or comparable degree in biological or soft matter physics, biomedical/material engineering or a related discipline. You have a strong background in data analysis and image processing. You enjoy working in interdisciplinary and international teams and have experimental experience in cell/tissue culture, microfluidics, or a related discipline. In addition, you can express yourself confidently both orally and in writing in English.
What we offer
We offer an in total four-year PhD scholarship (2000€ tax-free monthly) in a highly motivated team combing on equal footing experimental and theoretical research. Professional education complementing your scientific research is offered via the TUM Graduate School and TUM IGSSE. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages applications from women as well as from all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same qualifications.
Application
We are looking forward to receiving your application documents, which include your CV, your list of publications, transcript of record, a motivation of your research interests (max. 1 page) and the contact details for two letters of recommendation in one PDF document. Please send them under the subject ”PhD in Biological Physics” by e-mail to Prof. Karen Alim ([email protected]) and Dr. Fatemeh Mirzapour ([email protected]) by 31.10.2022. We will also be happy to provide you with further information in advance.
The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude and professional performance.
