The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Laser Particle Acceleration invites applications as PhD (f/m/d) Medical physics. The position will be available from 1 November 2021. The employment contract is limited to three years.


Tasks:

Establishment of precise image-guided small animal proton irradiation at the experimental proton beam line of the University Proton Therapy Dresden and at the Penelope laser accelerator at Helmholtz­ Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The thesis will be an integral part of the emerging research field of ultra­-high dose rate radiobiology at HZDR/Oncoray connecting advanced accelerator research on laser-driven accelerators with the development of dedicated devices, dosimetry and radiobiological studies on the broad accelerator infrastructure available at HZDR/Oncoray.

As the basis for the preparation of the dissertation, the specific tasks include:

  • Combining CT-based small animal irradiator and proton beam lines
  • Planning, execution and evaluation of Monte Carlo beam transport simulations
  • Literature research, publication and presentation of scientific results

Requirements:
  • Very good Master's degree in Physics or closely related technical or natural science studies

  • Experience with medical imaging, especially CT, dose delivery and dosimetry

  • Experience in radiation treatment planning for protons and Monte Carlo simulation are advantageous

  • Very good experimental and computer programming skills

  • Independent working style, demanding high quality of your own work

  • Very good English language skills (verbal and written)
