Description/content

The PhD programme in Experimental Medicine provides a project-oriented postgraduate education in basic and applied research in medicine. The goal of the programme is to enable candidates to carry out independent scientific work and to equip them with advanced professional qualifications for jobs in research and all research-related areas.
The main component of the PhD programme is an individual research project to be submitted in the form of a doctoral thesis. In addition, specialised courses and seminars taught in small groups equip young researchers with useful knowledge and skills.
Technical and practical modules are offered in the research areas of Infection Medicine and Microbiology, Immunology, Oncology, Neurosciences, Pharmacology/Cardiology/Vascular Medicine, Imaging Technology and Biomedical Engineering, amongst others. A large catalogue of electives, which comprises advanced seminars and courses in soft skills and professional skills, is available.
A special feature of our programme is the possibility to receive the double academic degree of MD/PhD.

University of Tübingen

Founded in 1477, the University of Tübingen is a prime location for academic studies and research. A full range of disciplines and a high standard of research, both in the sciences and humanities, contribute to its international reputation. Recently, its institutional strategy was successfully selected for funding in the Excellence Initiative sponsored by the German federal and state governments, making Tübingen one of Germany's 11 universities distinguished with that title of excellence.
The university offers a wide range of cross-disciplinary events and sponsors many cultural highlights in the city. Today, 29,000 students are enrolled in approx. 280 courses of instruction.
The Faculty of Medicine Tübingen is one of the top-ranking medical faculties in Germany. It provides an excellent environment for graduate studies due to well-equipped research laboratories, up-to-date core facilities and Tübingen's active community of outstanding scientists in the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, the Max Planck Institutes and Helmholtz Research Units.

University location

Tübingen is situated in the south-west of Germany, on the Neckar river and at the foothills of the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest. The old centre of Tübingen with its market square and town hall is surrounded by a unique ensemble of historic timber-framed buildings dating from the late 15th to the early 16th century. It attracts many visitors every year.
Tübingen also offers a rich array of cultural and social activities year-round. These include famous art exhibitions at the local gallery, two theatres, indoor and open air concerts as well as archaeological and scientific collections, and the Studium Generale, a public lecture series offered by the university. There are also numerous parks, gardens, and forested areas to explore on foot or by bicycle. With its scenic geographical setting, lively local culture and extensive green space, Tübingen offers its residents an excellent quality of life.
Recreation and social life can be found in Tübingen's restaurants serving local Swabian and international foods, in traditional beer bars and outdoor cafés, or by joining one of the student orchestras or choirs. An athletics programme offers a variety of sport activities to students, and the immediate surroundings of the town provide an inviting environment for outdoor activities such as swimming, cycling and hiking, or cross-country skiing in the winter.
