Description/content

The PhD programme in Medical Life Science and Technology provides high-level scientific training for students with a background in medicine as well as for those with a background in natural and life sciences or engineering. We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a strong record of academic achievement and a keen interest in scientific research.

This three-year programme consists primarily of an experimental scientific project that is performed in the laboratory of a faculty member. The practical work is complemented by interdisciplinary lectures, seminars and practical courses. About 50 research groups from various departments, working with a wide variety of techniques, actively participate in the programme. The projects cover a diverse range of topics within and continuously expand the boundaries of the programme's main research areas: cardiovascular, imaging, immunology and infection, neuroscience, oncology, and molecular medicine.

Medical students at Technische Universität München (TUM) can be admitted well before obtaining their final medical degree. In an attempt to improve their clinical-scientific education, they will be able to continue their regular medical studies alongside the training within the PhD programme.

Course organisation

In addition to the dissertation project, students will participate in lectures, practical courses, seminars and lab rotations relating to their projects. To accommodate the individual project schedules, students can choose when to take these classes. However, it is recommended that they sign up for classes during their first semesters in the programme. Advice on how best to organise course schedules will be provided by the programme coordinator on an individual basis.

As member of the TUM Graduate School, our PhD students can pursue one of the following international research activities:

• a research stay abroad at an academic institution or a research-based industrial company of at least two weeks
• presentation of their own research findings at international conferences outside of Germany in the form of posters or talks
• joint research projects with international guest scientists at the TUM who can also be invited to TUM by a group of doctoral candidates for the appropriate amount of time

Typically, candidates will receive funding through their supervisor. The four best applicants also receive a stipend from the School of Medicine.

Academic admission requirements

Medical degree or Master of Science (or "Diplom" if applicable) degree in a relevant subject area such as biology, chemistry, physics, engineering or psychology.
Medical students at Technische Universität München can be admitted before receiving their medical degree but have to finish their medical studies before graduating from the PhD programme. Good academic grades from previous studies are a prerequisite.
Some research experience and a clear idea of why they want to enter a challenging doctoral research programme will strengthen the application.
Bachelor's degrees are not sufficient.

Language requirements

Non-native speakers must provide proof of English skills by providing TOEFL (88/120 minimum), IELTS Academic (at least 6.5/9) or Cambridge (CAE or CPE) test results.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

Students are expected to focus on their research projects and coursework. To allow them to be in the lab full-time, all students receive funding.
