- Description/content
The programme offers exciting research opportunities at ultra-intense electron and x-ray sources to directly observe atomic motions during primary events. The use of ultrafast imaging over the relevant length and time scales generates new levels of understanding of the interplay between structure and dynamics. Specific areas include the theoretical and experimental aspects of condensed matter and atomically resolved dynamics, fundamental light-matter interaction, accelerator-based light sources, coherent imaging, coherent controlled molecular and solid state dynamics, molecular imaging, extreme timescale spectroscopy, ultrafast optics and x-ray science, and their relevance and applications in chemistry, biology and medicine.
The individual PhD projects are described on our website: https://www.mpsd.mpg.de/350422/open_phd_projects .
- Course organisation
-
IMPRS-UFAST is a structured PhD programme that complements intensive thesis research in a highly interdisciplinary context with a varied programme of scientific courses and soft skills training.
The Research School is interdisciplinary in scope, and it encourages cross-disciplinary thesis research. Supervision and teaching within the Research School are a synergistic effort on the part of experts from relevant fields within physics and chemistry as well as touching on biology.
Lectures, interactive workshops, advanced courses, and general academic and soft skills courses give young researchers the opportunity to broaden their horizons and develop skills that will give them a sound foundation for their future career paths. - Certificates for specific modules are awarded

- Academic admission requirements
IMPRS-UFAST welcomes applications from talented and enthusiastic students worldwide. We seek applicants with excellent academic backgrounds. Applicants must hold an MSc degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or related areas. Excellent applicants with a BSc degree in physics can also apply in exceptional cases. Please note that the prerequisites for a final acceptance depend on admission to the Fast Track PhD programme of one of our cooperation partners. They need to be passionate about research in ultrafast phenomena and motivated to conduct rigorous scientific work over the whole degree period.
- Language requirements
Applicants must provide proof of their English skills in the form of an official language test (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Advanced or Professional). Exceptions may be made for students who have completed a significant part of their higher education at an institution where the language of instruction is English. Please contact the IMPRS coordinator for details.
