In this position, you will be guided to conduct your own project by renowned experts leading a multidisciplinary national cooperation, supported by the German Centre of Cardiovascular Research (DZHK, Innovation cluster) regarding the following topic:

Takotsubo- and Stroke-heart syndrome: two sides of the same coin?

Takotsubo- or the Broken-Heart syndrome is often triggered by an episode of severe stress followed by acute heart failure in the absence of coronary obstruction, which may also occur in the so- called Stroke-heart syndrome early after stroke. Both cause significant mortality and lack a specific therapy. They also share other aspects, including brain regions typically affected, high levels of stress hormones, and myocardial inflammation (e. g. Nature cardiovascular research 2, 645–655, 2023). We propose that both syndromes are driven by an overlapping pathophysiology and will compare the functional and molecular features of both syndromes with mechanistic dissection including murine cardiac single-cell sequencing and cell culture studies with our cooperation partners (MDC Berlin, Charité Berlin, University Hospital Mannheim, University Hospital Lübeck). We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate starting February 2024.
