The Soil Science (PTS) group at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is offering the position of a

PhD candidate in soil science, agroforestry (all genders welcome)

in the BMBF-funded joint research project BonaRes-SIGNAL ‘Sustainable Intensification of aGriculture through Agroforestry’. The position is for 3 years and will be filled as soon as possible. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (E13 TV-L) with 50% of the regular working hours (19.90 h per week).

Background
The Bonares-SIGNAL project evaluates whether and under which site conditions agroforestry in Germany can be a land-use alternative that is ecologically more sustainable than conventional agriculture. This challenge is addressed in 11 projects coordinated by Prof. Edzo Veldkamp. For more information see: http://www.signal.uni-goettingen.de/. The incumbent will conduct research on innovative solutions to improve the nutrient response efficiencies of experimental agroforestry systems and, in cooperation with other Bonares projects, other innovative experimental agricultural systems in Germany. Specific responsibilities include: a) conducting and organizing field measurements for plant- and soil-available nutrients in agroforestry systems and other innovative agricultural systems, and b) analyzing data, writing publications, giving presentations in (inter)national conferences and completing a PhD degree.

Your profile
- Complete Master’s degree in soil science, (geo-)ecology, environmental sciences, forestry, agriculture or related discipline
- Research focus on ecosystem nutrient fluxes and availability
- Good knowledge of ecological statistics (using R)
- Interest to collaborate with other researchers in this interdisciplinary project
- Proficiency in English; German knowledge will be an advantage
- Driving license (Class B)

The project will be based in Goettingen, fieldwork will be conducted in experimental on-farm agroforestry and other agriculture sites across Germany.
