Machine learning specialist in Ecology

Updated: about 2 months ago
Deadline: 2024-03-31T00:00:00Z

Temporary Position for 12 Months, starting from 01.04.2024

Qualifications

We are looking for somebody with a masters or PhD degree with experience in machine learning / data science.

The candidate should have expertise in the application of various machine learning algorithms using e.g. Python or R programming language. Application of ML approaches, including SML algorithms for environmental predictions (e.g., Random Forests, Support Vector Machines, K- nearest neighbors) as well as unsupervised ML algorithms for clustering (e.g., K- means clustering, network analysis) will be required. Biological or ecological background would be desirable, but is not a must.

Tasks

We want to investigate and evaluate the impact of deep-sea mining using biological sequencing data (metabarcoding, metagenomics, metratranscriptomics). We have a time series of deep-sea sediments that have been subjected to a mining test run, as well as samples from reference areas. We would also like to test different machine learning approaches, supervised and unsupervised, e.g. for categorizing samples based on environmental parameters or identifying biomarkers.
