The IMPRS-IDI, established in 2005, is a vibrant international doctoral programme with 60-70 doctoral students from more than 20 different countries. The graduate school offers outstanding training and support in an excellent scientific network. Faculty members are affiliated with internationally renowned research institutes in Berlin as well as the Berlin universities. Our mission is to help PhD candidates to develop into creative and critical, responsible and self-confident young researchers. We strive to provide excellent training to our students. The outstanding research projects analysing the molecular, cellular and organismal basis of infections and immune reactions in our graduate school programme are supported by a flexible curriculum structure, including training courses, seminars and lectures on scientific topics as well as technical and complementary skills (30 ECTS).

Faculties

The IMPRS-IDI was founded in 2005 as a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU).

Our members are affiliated with several internationally leading research institutions in Berlin, including the Freie Universität Berlin, the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Technische Universität Berlin, the German Rheumatology Research Center (DRFZ), the Robert Koch Institute, the Max Planck Research Unit for the Science of Pathogens, and the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces.

Our graduate programme is also part of a wider network of graduate schools in the areas of infectious diseases, (chronic) inflammation and immunity that collaborate under the umbrella of the "ZIBI Graduate School ".

Career advisory service

IMPRS-IDI PhD candidates receive career development advice during the annual curriculum talks with the IMPRS coordinator as well as in the yearly thesis advisory committee meeting that includes a career development part.

The IMPRS-IDI curriculum includes training offers for different career tracks. Furthermore, PhD candidates of the graduate school have access to all training and career advice services and platforms of the Max Planck Society and the Berlin universities.

List of doctoral programmes and other offers

Doctoral candidates in the IMPRS-IDI conduct research on a wide range of topics aiming to explain the biochemical, genetic, molecular, cellular and organismal basis of infections and immune reactions. The projects are in the areas of pathogenicity mechanisms, pathogen-host interactions, pathogen-host co-evolution, pathogenomics, chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, development and differentiation of immune cells and infectious disease epidemiology.

Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology

The Max Planck Society is Germany's most successful research organisation. With 30 Nobel Laureates among the ranks of its scientists, it is on equal footing with the best and most prestigious research institutions worldwide.

The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology was founded in 1992. The Institute employs multi-disciplinary approaches to infection biology, comprising concepts and methodologies of molecular genetics, immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, clinical research and protein chemistry. The Institute promotes the applications of its research towards paving the way for the design of rational measures of control of infectious diseases.

The Institute moved to a specially built facility in the heart of Berlin on the historical Charité medical campus in the summer of 2000. The chosen location was intended to support the goal of the Institute to research infectious diseases in close collaboration with universities and clinical units.
