Fachbereich Geowissenschaften - Institut für Meteorologie AG WECLIP2 positions research assistant (PhD student) (m/f/d) with 50% part-time limited to 4 years Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU Reference Code: PhD_WECLIP Bewerbungsende: 14.02.2022

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The research of the working group "Weather and Climate Processes" headed by Stephan Pfahl covers various aspects of atmospheric dynamics, extreme weather events and the atmospheric water cycle. Numerical models of varying complexity and different observational data sets are used to study atmospheric processes and phenomena on time scales ranging from single weather events to long term climate change.

Job description:
There are two identical PhD positions available. The topic of the first position is the dynamics of blocking anticyclones and their change in a warming climate. It will be investigated which processes in the atmosphere (e.g., dynamics of Rossby waves, latent heating in ascending air streams, ...) can lead to such a change and how they are represented in climate models. The topic of the second position is, on the one hand, the persistence of weather conditions and, on the other hand, their abrupt change. It will be investigated how persistence or abrupt changes are related to extreme weather events, which processes are responsible for them, and how these relationships change in a warmer climate. There is a teaching commitment for both positions. Please include a one-page letter of motivation with your application, including a statement which of the two projects outlined above you prefer.

Requirements:
Completed university degree in meteorology, mathematics or physics (master's degree).

Desirable:
Experience in atmospheric dynamics and the analysis of meteorological data by using Python, R or a comparable programming language. Fluency in English and the ability to work in a team. Knowledge of German to perform the teaching is an advantage, but not mandatory.

Applications should be sent by e-mail, together with significant documents, indicating the reference code, in PDF format (preferably as one document) to Mr. Prof. Dr. Stephan Pfahl – attn. Mrs. Coenders (secretary): [email protected] .
