The Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing group at the Institute of Geological Sciences of Freie Universität Berlin is involved in several ESA and NASA space missions to explore the solar system and our neighbouring planets. In the field of terrestrial planets, our group is particularly active with a focus on remote sensing and image processing.
With our instrument participations in the "High Resolution Stereo Camera" on the Mars Express probe as well as the Mastcam-Z camera of the Perseverance Rover of the "Mars 2020" mission, we investigate the formation of various geological deposits on Mars and their relation to water.

Job description:

You will create high-resolution terrain models of Mars with existing specific software packages under Linux and Windows. To determine layer thickness's, their attitude in space and other measurements on the DTM, you will develop your own plugin for the free geographic information system QGIS. You will relate the results obtained to geomorphological observations and document them in the form of geological mapping and profiles. Based on these results, you will investigate sedimentary deposits, their geological formation conditions and development history, and their climatic boundary conditions.

The position serves for qualification (PhD).

Degree in a natural science discipline (preferably geology or geography) or geoinformatics (then in conjunction with geology or geomorphology)

- Solid background in remote sensing and image processing

- Good programming skills in Python (and interest in improving them).
- Experience in processing geodata with GIS systems (knowledge in handling 3D data is an advantage)
- Confident handling of the command line, Bash and working on Linux servers
- Fluent in English (writing and speaking)
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Affinity to open source
