Fachbereich Geowissenschaften - Institut für Geographische Wissenschaften AB Physische GeographieResearch Assistant (PhD/PraeDoc) (m/f/d) with 1/2-part-time job limited to 4 years Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU reference code: DustMed Bewerbungsende: 06.12.2021

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The advertised position is part of an interdisciplinary project within the Department of Geosciences at Freie Universität Berlin with the goal of obtaining a doctoral degree (PhD). The project is jointly headed by Prof. Dr. Kerstin Schepanski (Institute of Meteorology, Radiation and Remote Sensing) and Dr. Fabian Kirsten (Institute of Geographical Sciences, Physical Geography). The doctoral candi-date will be formally associated with the Department of Physical Geography (Prof. Dr. B. Schütt) at the Institute of Geographical Sciences, but explicitly working on the interface of physical geography and meteorology.

Job description:
Within the framework of the project "Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Dust Inputs in the Eastern Mediterranean (Regional Focus: Crete) and their Composition and Significance for Current Soil For-mation Processes", both meteorological and physical geographical aspects concerning dust transport and deposition in the eastern Mediterranean will be investigated.
The focus is on questions concerning the provenance, trajectories as well as the seasonality and atmospheric distribution of mineral dusts in the eastern Mediterranean area and their subsequent deposition in terrestrial environments. The goal of the project is a source-to-sink model of mineral dusts with respect to sediment budgets and soil formation processes.
The research questions will be addressed by a combination of satellite- and model data-analysis as well as extensive field experiments on Crete and subsequent laboratory analysis. An own study design will be conceived and implemented using low-cost dust traps.
Teaching (in German) in the Bachelor of Geographical Sciences.

The position is explicitly designed as a PhD-position.

Requirements:
Completed university degree (MA) in meteorology, geosciences, or physical geography (or closely related subjects).

Desirable:
- Willingness to spend at least one extended field visit in the study area, driving license (EU class B)
- Good oral and written English skills, German language skills
- Experience in field and laboratory work
- Experience in the analysis of (meteorological) model and satellite data
- Programming skills (R, Python)
- Knowledge in statistical data analysis and the use of geographic information systems (GIS)
