The position is part of the joint project "Regional Research Centre - Transformations of Political Violence" and is to be filled on a fixed-term basis in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG and § 72 HessHG with the opportunity for own academic qualification at the Chair of Public Law and International Law at the Faculty of Law. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E13 TV-H).

As long as the maximum permissible duration of a fixed-term contract is not exceeded, you will be employed until 31.03.2026.

The joint project "Regional Research Centre - Transformations of Political Violence" is a cooperation project of the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), Goethe University Frankfurt, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Philipps University Marburg and Darmstadt Technical University. It is an interdisciplinary research initiative funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The centre is dedicated to the study of political violence and for this purpose brings together different disciplinary perspectives as well as methodological approaches.

Within the framework of the centre, institutions for the prevention and legitimation of political violence will be researched at JLU Giessen. We are looking for an outstanding and highly qualified doctoral candidate to strengthen the interdisciplinary regional research centre in the field of interpretations and attributions of meaning of political violence.

Your tasks at a glance

The range of tasks of this position, which is assigned to the Campus Research Focus 'Culture - Conflict - Security' at JLU Giessen, includes in particular:

  • Development and independent implementation of a doctoral project on institutions for the prevention and legitimation of political violence; the doctoral project should be in the field of history, law (international law) or social sciences
  • Archival research or qualitative empirical field studies in the study area
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation and to communicate research results to the political and social public
  • Participation in the activities of the Giessen Campus Research Focus and the joint project coordinated by PRIF (Frankfurt)

The provision of academic services (including the processing of a research project financed by third party funds on a temporary basis) also serves the purpose of academic qualification.

Your qualifications and competences

  • A very good Master's degree (or comparable) in history, law or social sciences
  • Very good methodological skills, especially in the field of archival studies or qualitative methods of empirical social research
  • Very good German, English and Spanish language skills
  • Very good intercultural skills
