About us: We develop novel methodology for data analysis at the cutting edge of applications in (cell) biology. In doing so, we closely collaborate with lab scientists and benefit from an interplay between approaches in statistics, geometry and optimization. We offer an interdisciplinary qualification program that equips our graduate students with a broad set of skills for analyzing data and its methodology, e.g. within the DFG collaborative research center “Mathematics of Experiment”, see https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/628179.html or within the DFG research unit “Mathematical Statistics in the Information Age, see https://for5381.uni-freiburg.de/en/research-unit-5381/

The position: PhD in Mathematical Statistics You will conduct research which preferably deals with one of the following topics:  Data analysis based on optimal transport, statistically efficient methods under computational constraints, or statistical methods for data on discrete structures. Additionally, you will get the opportunity to take place in our study program, which includes special lectures and seminars, annual workshops, regular meetings with other PhD students as well as with your thesis advisory committee.

Your profile As a successful candidate, you

  • hold an excellent or very good Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, engineering, statistics,physics or a related area,
  • have strong interest and background in mathematical statistics, optimization and/or geometry
  • are proficient in written and spokenEnglish,
  • have gained experience in programming and data analysis (e.g., Python, R,C++).
