in Host Stress Response to Infection

for 3 years initially.

The LPI is being established by a consortium of four research institutions (Leibniz-HKI , Leibniz-IPHT , FSU Jena , University Hospital Jena ). In the future, scientists at the LPI will combine photonic technologies with infection research and thus contribute to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods for human medicine. Research results will be transferred to clinical practice along the entire value chain. The LPI research program is subdivided into basic technologies, in which the four supporting institutions jointly address various scientific and technological questions in an interdisciplinary approach.

Project background:

Curing infectious diseases and supporting the immune system in its fight against a wide variety of pathogens is one of the great challenges of medicine. Due to the complexity of infectious events and the associated multitude of triggered pathophysiological processes in immune cells, different and sometimes very time-consuming diagnostic procedures are currently used.

In this project, the successful applicant will contribute to the development of an easy-to-use photonic high-throughput method for temporally resolved screening of host responses to diverse stressors, including pathogenic fungi, bacteria and drugs. Therefore, the initial focus of the project is the characterization of cell responses by detecting specific cell damage and death parameters using different epithelial reporter cell lines. Candidate´s profile:

We expect a Master´s degree (or equivalent) in Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology). Furthermore, the applicant should be able to perform team-oriented as well as independent work. Experimental background in one or more of the following subjects are beneficial: Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Infection Biology, Immunology, Cell Biology. Practical experiences in genetics, proteomics, cell culture, and fluorescence microscopy are an advantage. Very good communication skills in English are necessary.

The successful candidate will be hosted in the department Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms . The institute is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-the-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups. We offer a multifaceted scientific project with excellent technical facilities, a place in a young, friendly, and committed team, as well as strong scientific collaborations. The PhD candidate will become an associated member of the local Jena graduate schools (International Leibniz Research School and/or the Jena School for Microbial Communication ) and participate in their structured program.

The employment relationship is concluded with the Leibniz-HKI and remuneration is in accordance with the German TV-L regulations (salary agreement for public service employees).
