The research group Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (SBI) is the coordinator of the PerMiCCion (Personalized microbiome-based approaches to early onset colorectal cancer prevention, diagnosis and management) consortium (Federal Ministry of Education and Research - BMBF). We are seeking an excellent and enthusiastic PhD student for high risk-high reward research in the integration of multi-omics analyses of metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and metabolomic data to identify disease-associated bacterial strains and their metabolites. Together with renowned scientists from the PerMiCCion consortium and supported by an excellent infrastructure you will have the opportunity to make an important contribution for a healthier society.   • A strong interest in conducting collaborative research on the topic outlined above is paramount
  • Candidates are expected to be interested in working at the boundaries of several research domains
  • Master´s degree in Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Knowledge and experience in the analysis of biological high-throughput data
  • Knowledge in statistical methods in the context of biological systems
  • Experience with programming (Python, Perl, C++, R)
  • Well-developed collaborative skills

The successful candidate will be hosted in the research group Systems Biology and Bioinformatics of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gianni Panagiotou of the Leibniz-HKI in an international, dynamic team, with access to state-of-the-art computational resources.

SBI is currently coordinating a Marie Curie ITN Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program ( ) and is an active participant of the Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse” ( ) and the CRC/Transregio 124 “Pathogenic fungi and their human host: Networks of interaction” ( ) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

We offer an international and multi-disciplinary environment with a strong expertise in the proposed research field. Currently the group consists of approximately 15 members at different levels of seniority.

The PhD candidate will participate in the structured program of the International Leibniz Research School and become an associated member of the Jena School of Microbial Communication .
