Active Photonic Metasurfaces

We are now recruiting for the first cohort of doctoral candidates for the transcontinental International Research Training Group IRTG 2675 “META-ACTIVE”, as well as for associated doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

META-ACTIVE will offer a unique doctoral education in cutting-edge photonics with excellent career perspectives for both industry and academia. META-ACTIVE PhD students will be trained at two world leading institutions in the field of meta-optics in Australia and Germany. Successful candidates will spend one year at the partner institution and pursue a dual PhD degree issued by both institutions. The doctoral education is designed as a three-year program and will be embedded in an attractive qualification program and supported by a strong environment and network.

Metasurfaces are two-dimensional arrangements of designed nanoscale building blocks that offer exquisite control over the properties of light fields and allow for the realization of ultra-compact, highly functional photonic devices. Within META-ACTIVE, the spatial light control provided by optical metasurfaces will be combined with the capability of their resonant building blocks to enhance light-matter interactions and/or facilitate a tunable optical response. The research program encompasses various projects in the areas of light-emitting metasurfaces, programmable metasurfaces and metasurface-enhanced detection.

The doctoral positions at the Friedrich Schiller University will be paid in accordance to the German Public Services Regulations TV-L up to E 13 (75%) and are planned to start on January 1st, 2022.

Please apply via the online application system of the Abbe School of Photonics. Application requirements include a Master’s degree in Physics, Photonics or a related discipline, excellent English skills, ability to work in a team, and willingness to travel and to spend extended periods of time abroad. The application deadline is September 10, 2021. Please refer in your application to the IRTG 2675 and the supervisors or projects you are interested in. Online interviews for selected candidates will be scheduled for September/October.

At META-ACTIVE, we believe that diversity increases productivity and innovation and that fostering a culture of inclusiveness will be a key contributor to the scientific and training excellence of META-ACTIVE. Therefore, women are highly encouraged to apply. In cases of equal qualification, aptitude and expertise, disabled applicants will be given preference in the selection process.

The IRTG 2675 is funded by the German Research Foundation through federal and state support.
