Offer Description

The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1633 ‘Pushing Electrons with Protons – Unifying Multi-Electron Redox Catalysis by Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer’ at the Georg-August-University Göttingen, together with the Max-Planck-Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (Göttingen), the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt, the Ruhr-University Bochum, the Technical University Darmstadt, and the Saarland University (Saarbrücken) is currently invitingapplications for

11 PhD Positions

starting on April 1, 2023. The salary is based on TV-L E13 and amounts 60-67 % of a full position for PhD candidates in chemistry and biology and 75 % in physics. The positions are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for 3 years.

The CRC 1633 is an interdisciplinary consortium of research groups from molecular synthesis, (photo-/electro-)catalysis, biology, surface and materials science, as well as spectroscopy and theory that starts in April 2024, with the first funding phase until the end of 2027. The CRC will comprehensively investigate the physicochemical phenomenon proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of chemical and biological systems in solution and at interfaces. It aims at developing unifying models for PCET across disciplines, as a basis to advance new strategies for energy- and atom-economic redox transformations of renewable and chemically inert feedstock, such as CO2 , O2 , H2 O, N2 , or biomass. Further information about the scientific agenda of the CRC 1633 is provided at our website . Detailed information about the offered positions can be found here .

The CRC 1633 offers a vibrant and interdisciplinary scientific environment. All PhD students of the CRC will be members of an Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG). The IRTG will organize joint workshops and structured training of personal and scientific skills relevant to the goals of the CRC, as well as interdisciplinary supervision of the PhD candidates by mixed thesis committees from different disciplines.

We are seeking highly motivated candidates, who wish to conduct their PhD training in an interdisciplinary environment. Successful candidates

  • will have completed their MSc or equivalent university degree in a subject area relevant for the research program of the CRC (see details for the different positions below),
  • Are fluent in English and are motivated to learn some German,
  • are keen to collaborate with other PhD candidates across disciplines.

Your application must include (compiled as one pdf document, in the order mentioned below!):

  • Motivation letter for the preferred project(s) (max. 1 page for up to max. three (!) projects): Please answer the following questions: Why do you want to become part of this CRC? Why did you choose the respective projects?
  • CV including information on posters, presentations, awards and publication list, if applicable
  • Certificate and transcript of final secondary-school examination (A-level, Abitur, European Baccalaureate or equivalent)
  • Bachelor's degree and transcript
  • Master's degree and transcript. If your Master's is not finished yet, upload the transcripts and let us know when you will be finished; successful completion of the MSc or equivalent university degree is mandatory prior to employment.
  • Publications, if available
  • References: names and contact details of two senior academics that know you well. Do not upload reference letters!

Please be aware that the application procedure consists of two steps. For details, please visit our application website .

The closing date for applications is March 15, 2024. We encourage advanced Master candidates to apply, but completion of the MSc or equivalent university degree will be mandatory prior to employment.

In case of further questions, please contact the CRC coordinator Dr. Miriam Teuscher ([email protected] , +49-551-39 23391) or the potential supervisor for project-specific issues.
