1 PhD Position in Regeneration in the nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster
Job Offer Details
Job Description

Neuronal regeneration is a major issue in neuroscience due to its relevance for brain injury and recovery. We investigate basic mechanism of processes related to neuronal injury in insects. Insects show a large variety of different responses to injuries. Many insects are able to regenerate neuronal structures and even show an injury related plasticity of neuronal networks.
In the proposed project the applicant should work with the small, but genetically accessible Drosophila melanogaster. Precise neuronal lesions requiring great manual skills are to be performed. Thereafter the resulting processes are investigated neuroanatomically (using tracing techniques), neurocytochemically and functionally (behavioural studies). The experiments are performed with different lines of D. melanogaster, either for methodological reasons, or in respect to the search for regeneration related mechanism. Such mechanisms will involve neuronal growth, neuronal guidance and neuronal targeting. Additionally, molecular biology techniques, like siRNA are applied in the project. Further application of, for example, ultrastructural techniques or genomics is possible. Besides profound knowledge in neurosciences and the mentioned manual skills, the project requires knowledge in genetics and additional techniques.
