Post-doctoral position in Economics
The "ENergy SUstainable Independent TErritories" (ENsuITe) hub at the University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour is seeking to recruit a post-doc researcher for a 1-year period (6 additional months to be confirmed at a later stage). This researcher will play a crucial role in a collaborative research project on Energy Communities.
Context
The University of Pau and the Pays de l'Adour is one of the French universities with the I-SITE (Initiatives Science Innovation, Territoires, Économie) label. It has been awarded the "Investissement d'avenir" label for two reasons: it is recognised as a university of excellence with the E2S UPPA project, Solutions for Energy and the Environment, led by the UPPA, INRA, Inria and CNRS consortium (I-SITE label) and with the SPACE project, Progressive and Accompanied Specialisation of the Student Curricula (NCU label, New University Courses).
The "ENergy SUstainable Independent TErritories" (ENsuITe) hub was launched in early 2021 for a duration of 5 years. It represents a research collaboration between "hard" sciences and social sciences to jointly work on the energy independence of a territory. The concept is that artificial photosynthesis may one day enable each inhabitant to store and redistribute the energy they have produced, in the form of green hydrogen, in their surroundings. Coordinated by the jurist Louis de Fontenelle and the chemist Laurent Billon, ENsuITe involves three research laboratories (IPREM, LMAP, TREE) and a mixed service unit (DMEX) of UPPA, along with four foreign universities (Canada, Spain, Germany). The hub brings together specialists in polymers, mathematicians, jurists, economists, sociologists, and more. The intern will be integrated into the team leading this project. The team of economists, consisting of Corinne Langinier (University of Alberta, Canada), Patrice Cassagnard (TREE, UPPA) and Carole Haritchabalet (TREE, UPPA), addresses the economic challenges of territorial energy production.
Post-doc subject
Final consumers have the opportunity to become active players in the energy market by producing their own energy, thereby increasing citizens' involvement in the energy system and accelerating the energy transition. Energy communities allow final consumers to jointly invest in a decentralized energy production unit and share their production to achieve economic, environmental, and social benefits while increasing the share of energy production from renewable sources. This evolution poses numerous economic challenges, related to the necessary adaptation of the traditional energy system (network tariffs that may create equity issues between active and traditional consumers), the emergence of new demand flexibility technologies (storage and aggregators), the formation of an energy community (highlighting the conditions for creating a viable community, according to several formulas chosen for the allocation of their production), or the impact of such communities on the traditional energy system.
The objective of this study is to examine the internal mechanisms of renewable energy communities and enhance our comprehension of their incorporation into the energy system. Our aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of establishing renewable energy communities on various stakeholders, as well as their internal structure and governance. Through this analysis, we seek to streamline the identification of best practices that can be translated into effective public policies.
Key responsibilities
•Conduct theoretical research in the respective fields of the research project.
•Organize and facilitate scientific exchanges among researchers from various departments and faculties within the specific research project and across other research projects.
•Co-organize events, including workshops, and other relevant activities.
Qualifications
•A Ph. D. in economics with a strong emphasis on microeconomic research methods.
•A proven experience in environmental / energy economics and policy is a significant asset.
•Excellent communication and writing skills
•Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic research environment.
•Knowledge of the French language is preferred but not mandatory.
